I've been sick for the past week..ugh! You know that feeling when you can't breathe through your nose, and you're going through Kleenex® as fast as you're binge-watching El Internado? It's awful! So there I was, blowing away and about to go on to my next season of El Internado, when something caught my eye...a Netflix original Spanish period drama television series called Las chicas del cable. Wait, what? Hmmm... I was interested enough to click on the more info button, but I wasn't buying it yet. Who cares about women working at a telephone company. Blah! But then I accidentally hit the play button, and I could not stop watching the first couple of scenes. And by that I mean the entire first episode.
So, in between my sniffles, I realized that three of my favorite El Internado alumni were in the show: Blanca Suárez, Yon González, and Martiño Rivas! By now, I'm on episode three and committed. Who doesn't want to watch Blanca, Yon, and Martiño all grown up? You know I did because I ended up watching all 8 episodes of the first season! Not only did the plot pull me in right away, but the entire cast is magnificent! Every character that has been introduced so far has a purpose and has been developed (enough) to be relevant to the story. I was enthralled by so many things, and as the show progressed, I couldn't stop watching it.
The series is built around two young lovers who, having been separated for more than ten years, find themselves reunited under very different circumstances. The show successfully captures the beauty of the times in regards to dress, atmosphere, and plaguing social issues of the 1920s. It also continues to ask (and at times answers) the question: can women have it all? So, while sipping my chicken noodle soup, I realized that I had begun to somehow care about women working at a telephone company. But in reality, it was because it means so much more! I owe progressive women and suffragists from that time my right to sit on this couch and veg! And of course, to live in a more equitable society.
But, let's not get too deep here and instead rejoice that the show has been renewed for a second season! And, I have a feeling it's going to be just as awesome. No spoilers here, but once you finish watching too, you'll also ask yourself how Alba and Francisco are going to maintain their secrets much longer...without damaging the precious relationships they've managed to build...
