After attending a wonderful presentation given by the awesome Sharon Birch back in 2012, I knew I needed to incorporate music into my lessons. I was completely sold on the value of using music to teach culture, social issues, traditions, and history. Armed with a folder full of valuable activities to get groovin', I slowly started introducing songs to my students. The instant interest and engagement from them was like music to my ears (I know, I know, so cliché) and I've been incorporating more and more music in class since.
Over time, it's proven to me, that even when a student is not in a good mood or a good "place," a music activity will help transform their attitude, even if it's for a short period of time. Whether it makes them happy, contemplative, or enthusiastically annoyed, it moves them. The best part is that my students are incredibly vocal about sharing their reactions and having their opinions heard about the songs we listen to.
